Sowers of Sustainability (S.O.S.) Training Program
Help plan, design, install and maintain sustainable gardens in Kansas City! Keep Kansas City Beautiful provides a four-week training program for Kansas City Area residents interested in forming teams of up to three people to build a sustainable garden. Schedules are suitable for teens and working adults. Course topics focus on motivating your community and educating you, the sower, about everything your community needs to know to build sustainable stormwater solutions in your community. The courses include training in the following areas:
- Organizing Your Community
- Implementing Knowledge of Basic Garden Techniques
- Building and Installing a Rain Barrel
- Creating Solutions for Stormwater Overflow
The S.O.S. training program will begin on Tuesday, August 17 at 5:30 PM. If you are interested in completing this course and leading a stormwater solution project in your community within Johnson County, Kansas or the Green Impact Zone of Kansas City, Missouri, please complete this registration form and return it to Melanie Allen at melanie.allen@bridgingthegap.org. 3rd Annual Dreamscape Makeover - August 20-21
Volunteer to help install the Dreamscape Makeover sustainable landscape at the contest winner's home. Work alongside landscape experts and pick up tips for your landscaping at home! For more information, contact Melanie Allen at 816-561-1061, ext. 107 or melanie.allen@bridgingthegap.org.
National Public Lands Day Beautification Event- Saturday, September 25
National Public Lands Day is the nation’s largest volunteer effort to enhance the outdoor public spaces enjoyed by all Americans. Through this initiative, volunteers help to beautify parks, water ways, roads and trails. This year, Keep Kansas City Beautiful will partner with Neighborhood Associations and Home Associations in Ruskin Heights/Village, Ruskin Hills, Kirkside and Stratford Estates along with St. Matthew Apostle Church CCO, Ruskin Neighborhoods CDC, and the Hickman Mills School District. We will install a rain garden and beautify five parks and twelve school sites.

Board of Directors – Volunteers representing businesses, government and the community provide guidance to Keep Kansas City Beautiful. Call KKCB to learn more about the Board or to set up an interview if positions are available.
Corporate Volunteer Workdays – Coordinate a weekday volunteer activity for a group of volunteers from your corporation. Contact KKCB for a calendar of available workdays and to learn more about the projects.
Sustainable Beautification - We participate in collaborative community efforts to beautify our city. Volunteer to help organize events and get your hands into the garden. Contact Laura O’Brien, Bridging The Gap Volunteer Services Manager to learn about our current activities.
Green and Litter-Free Events – Support your favorite events by volunteering to manage recycling. Volunteers may set up and break down recycling bins, replace full bags of recyclables, remove trash from recycling bins and encourage event attendees to recycle. This is an ideal opportunity for both individuals and groups.
