Sponsored by Keep America Beautiful, the Great American Cleanup™ is the nation's largest annual community improvement program. Each year during March, April and May, volunteers nationwide pick up litter, clean rivers and hiking trails, renew parks, plant community gardens, plant trees and flowers, hold environmental education events and more.
As part of the 2009 Great American Cleanup™ in Kansas City, 5,536 volunteers worked approximately 16608 hours!
Volunteers also:
- Held 80 cleanup, beautification and environmental education events in 68 communities
- Collected more than 556,540 pounds of litter
- Cleaned 56 illegal dumping sites
- Collected more than 14,476 tires for recycling – WOW!
- Planted more than 200 flowers and one tree
- Cleaned and improved more than 36 miles of streets, 16 acres of parks and 14 miles of rivers.
